05 – Giendei Tries

Keep trying, Giendei, you’ll succeed one day.

This might be the first comic where we can properly see Theodius’s northern garb. As some Finnish readers may have already guessed, his dress is directly based on Finnish national costumes from the Southern Ostrobothnian region – the vest with two button rows and the helavyö belt with its short ‘puukko’ knife being the most obvious signs – and the term ‘nordling’ (pohjolainen) has been derived from the word ‘pohjalainen’ (someone from Ostrobothnia) to mean a citizen of the Northlands. Theodius speaks with the Southern Ostrobothnian dialect when using his own tongue, but as this is hard to replicate in writing properly, I’ve decided to write his speech without any dialectal flavour.
